This Indian relish from Brooklyn Delhi is made with roasted garlic, lemon, oil, red chili powder, unrefined cane sugar and a mix of fragrant Indian spices. The result is a spicy, sour, savory, and sweet condiment. While it’s traditionally eaten with rice, curry, and yogurt, we’ve found there’s very little we don’t enjoy spreading some of this on top of. From grilled pizzas, to grilled meats and fish, to stirred into soups, this achaar is endlessly versatile.

After repeatedly filling suitcase after suitcase with jars of achaars—India’s equivalent of kimchi—following annual trips to India, Chitra Agrawal promptly got her fiancé, Ben Garthus, hooked. Once their supply started depleting in record time, Chitra realized the achaars available in the U.S. were sorely lacking—much too salty and decidedly uninspired. Since 2009, Chitra has been specializing in serving, teaching, and writing about Indian recipes using local ingredients at the ABCD's of Cooking and is currently writing a cookbook on South Indian vegetarian home cooking. Brooklyn Delhi products are an outgrowth of her work in food. With fresh, seasonal, and local (whenever possible) ingredients like tomatoes, rhubarb, garlic, and American gooseberries, Chitra has concocted her own versions of this spicy, sour, sweet, and savory Indian condiment—all handmade in small-batches in Brooklyn, NY, with all packaging design done by Ben, a designer and sculptor. Their popular condiments have been featured in Food & Wine, Saveur, Zagat, Cool Hunting and The Huffington Post.
